Adonal's All Star Students:
This year, KLF honored all attending children who received an 80 percent or higher for their overall grade for the 2008-2009 school year. KLF wanted to honor these children in front of their peers and encourage them to continue to strive for excellence in the classroom. Each successful student received a special "Adonal's All Star Student" pencil kit complete with pencils, eraser and pencil sharpener, and, quantities permitting, an Athletics and Academics basketball. Of the 1500 or so total campers, roughly 80 children did well enough in school to become part of Adonal's All Star Students. Bequia had the largest number of All Stars with 41 students.
Literacy Promotion:
KLF brought 2052 childrens books to SVG and held a book fair along with each Camp. Every participating child was given the opportunity to select a book that appealed to them. We gave out roughly 1500 books, and all children received information on a follow up book report competition with entries due by the end of September. All participating readers will compete for prizes such as more books, basketball clothes and other cool stuff. We will also compile the best book reports into a short magazine to be distributed in the schools as well as to our KLF supporters.Books left over from the book fair will be donated to local schools.
CrocsTM for All Campers:
Thanks to UNICEF, CrocsTM, SolesUnited(SM) who generously donated roughly 3000 pairs of CrocsTM to give out to our campers. Many children in St. Vincent & the Grenadines either can't afford shoes or have only one pair of shoes which are saved for school and special occasions. In the more northern parts of St. Vincent (mainland), KLF's Executive Director has seen children on the weekends walking barefoot for long distances. This donation of CrocsTM means that all of our campers now own a pair of brand new shoes. These CrocsTM might become their every day walking shoes, athletic shoes or perhaps "Sunday best" shoes, but however the chidren choose to use them, we know their feet will be the better for it. Remaining CrocsTM will be distributed responsibly via other KLF programs.
Training of Physical Education Teachers:
KLF hosted a special training of trainers (ToT) session for basketball coaches and physical education teachers during each Camp. Keon Weise, the Orlando Magic Team's Trainer, led each three hour session, training a total of 37 coaches and P.E. teachers.
