Adonal's All-Stars Assist Hurricane Victims

Kerosene Lamp Foundation (KLF) donated over 300 pairs of shoes to victims of Hurricane Tomas living on the Windward side of St. Vincent. The All-Stars had come together in St. Vincent for their first group meeting since their trip to the States in July. On Saturday, November 13th, 2010, Adonal Foyle’s All-Star Student-Athletes and their mentors loaded up a truck of donated CrocsTM and carried them to the communities of Fancy, Owia, Sandy Bay, Tourama and Chester Town.

“I was greatly troubled to hear about the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Tomas on the lives of my fellow countrymen, and so glad that I could rally my All-Star Student-Athletes to assist in some small way,” said Adonal Foyle. “I feel that it is very important to develop a strong sense of civic duty in the younger generations as we must all help our fellow citizens. In addition to daily reading assignments, spending two to three hours a week doing community service projects is a requirement for being one of my All-Star Student-Athletes.”

This was the first time Foyle’s All-Star Student-Athletes had participated in such a large community service project and they found the experience extremely rewarding. “The sun was hot, and the work was not easy, but our All-Stars did an outstanding job greeting the community members and treating them with respect as they went distributed the shoes,” said KLF’s Executive Director, Shiyana Valentine. She went on to say, “We were just happy that we could play a small part in brightening the day of those who had gone through the trauma of the hurricane. According to Mayreau All-Star, Nemiah Alexander, “The people were excited to receive the shoes and I liked to see them happy with what we were giving them.”

Important local partners included Mr. Samuel Browne, Ms. Tiziana Browne, Ms. Sabrina Mitchell, the Principals and key teachers at Fancy Government School, Owia Primary School, Tourama/Overland Primary School, and Sandy Bay Government School, Ben’s Car Rental, Ms. Latoya Creese, Mr. George Stephens, Mr. Stapleton, and the entire staff at the Owia Salt Pond Park.

The following day the All-Stars underwent Math and English assessments to see how their skills compared to their grades levels. Based on the results KLF mentors will work with the kids to help raise their academic skills up to par. As part of their weekend meeting, they also participated in their first book club. The All-Stars were given Travel Team by Mike Lupica to read over the summer, and they had a lively discussion on the subject matter.

KLF is extremely proud of their All-Star Student-Athletes: Consolo Adams, Nemiah Alexander, Leandru Edwards, Jemmile France, Zanif Sandy, and Azizah Stowe; and mentors Roseman Adams and Owen Isaacs.
