Kerosene Lamp Foundation Announces College Scholarship Recipients from Inaugural Program

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College Student Also Awarded Scholarship to Participate in 2016 SPISE Program

July 16, 2016 – The Kerosene Lamp Foundation, founded with the mission to work with at-risk youth in US and the Caribbean through its Athletics & Academics basketball camps, mentorship and court refurbishment projects, is pleased to announced four scholarship recipients in the U.S. who will be attending college in New York this fall.

In addition, KLF has also awarded a scholarship to one student in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to participate in the 2016 Student Program for Innovation in Science and Engineering (SPISE), hosted by the Caribbean Science Foundation.

“College plays an important role in a young person’s growth and development in their search for a career and brighter future,” said Adonal Foyle, former NBA player, founder and president of the Kerosene Lamp Foundation. “It is important that we invest in young minds and provide them with the tools and resources necessary to receive a quality education. I am proud of these students and look forward to seeing them unlock their potential to create a better future.”

This year’s U.S. scholarship recipients are:

  • Rogike A. Thorpe (18): Plans to major in physical education and recreation and become a physiotherapist.
  • Kailon Kirby (18): Plans to major in physical education and recreation and pursue a career in sports management and physical therapy.
  • Consolo Adams (21): Plans to major in accounting and become an entrepreneur.
  • Erasto Dasilva (18): Plans to major in physical education and recreation and become an athletic trainer of physiotherapist.

Vincentian student Abigail Scott, who attends St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, received a scholarship from KLF to attend SPISE 2016 a intensive four-week enrichment residential summer program (July 16 to August 13) for gifted Caribbean high-school students interested in studying and exploring careers in science and engineering. Abigail is particularly interested in chemical and biochemical engineering and pharmaceuticals.

The scholarships are part of a KLF initiative to provide students the opportunity to attend college through need- and merit-based scholarships. So far, KLF has four student-athletes in the program.
