KLF Spotlight:
KLF Raises HIV/AIDS Awareness in the Caribbean
Barbados - On December 1, commonly known as World AIDS Day, KLF Founder Adonal Foyle had the honor of making the keynote speech at the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS (CBMP) Leadership Summit.
Given that the Caribbean region has the highest prevalence of HIV after sub-Saharan Africa, KLF was an early participant in the campaign to prevent HIV. Since 2005, we have incorporated HIV/AIDS education into our Athletics & Academics Camps held in St. Vincent & the Grenadines and Trinidad & Tobago.
Over 2500 kids have participated in our HIV/AIDS awareness sessions which are taught in a context of play to help kids understand the concepts better. In recognition of our work, the CBMP visited our All-Star Camp this summer to film a public service announcement that will featured Adonal and our kids as part of their LIVE UP campaign to be launched in early 2012.
The CBMP is the region's first coordinated media response to the HIV pandemic. Established in 2006, it unites 110 top broadcasters from 24 countries and creates a structured framework for sharing information and resources among broadcasters that significantly expands HIV/AIDS-related programming and public education activities across the Caribbean.
During CBMP's Leadership Summit, Adonal addressed 94 members on the importance of continuing the fight, and the World Aids Day 2011 theme "Getting to Zero." According to CBMP's Executive Director, Allyson Leacock, their broadcast partners found Adonal "inspiring and helped renew their commitment. Other partners said [he] was so refreshing that it reinvigorated their interest in their work and mission. While others who said they had become jaded and were thinking of giving up on this work, said [he] gave them hope to continue."
